An experience by Joseph AZAR

About

A little bit of history

In August 2020, every morning I decided to take some time for myself in nature to find inspiration, to run, to breathe.
I turned 40 that year, an occasion to give myself the gift of some time to listen and reflect on what I wanted for the years to come.

With each trip to the forest, revelations and vision appeared to me, like a direction to take for my life's projects.
I was like a child, back home with plenty of stars in my eyes.

LiDAR

I got myself an IPAd pro. Browsing the available apps, I quickly realized that it has an integrated LiDAR Sensor. Then I fell into a new dimension, that of augmented reality. The LiDAr allows me to scan objects and generate the 3d rendering of mesh or cloud points. I was immediately hooked on the cloud points rendering, finding the mix of reality and clouds to be magical, completely stunning.

I have the desire to make people dream and to create interactive experiences with this tool.

Trees are witnesses of time, we can imagine their path of life, through their shape, be it harmonious or sometimes completely wounded physiologies. I didn't think of them as teachers, yet I learned much from observing them. These are the ones I want to scan! I would like to visualize their soul.

What I have learned?

Humanly:

Trees can live for centuries, with them we admire this slowness. It enabled me to build this project because I was not afraid to take my time, to make mistakes, to experiment.
Each day I moved forward, whether it be in 25 minutes or 4 hour sessions. An idea, in concept is nothing without its execution. I took care of that idea and nurtured it like a good gardener.

Technically:

Every new project, I try to improve my skills in a new technology. For this project I learned to communicate with two different worlds.
The Front-End being made with the React library and using WebGL for the immersive 3D scene, with ThreeJS.
As of today, this is my most complete project using the following technologies:

  • Three.js
  • GLSL shaders
  • React
  • React Three Fiber

Project Direction:

I wanted to build the ideal agency for this project, the kind of agency that I would like to evolve in. One that mixes creative coding, musical composition, voice over, philosophic and poetic thoughts and moments of explorations and observation in nature.
To incorporate the use of LiDAR in nature to transcribe a digital vision of objects.

I collaborated with Félix Péault - Art Director, and Emilie Grandjean - Artistic Consultant in authenticity. Our skills and human relations allowed us to deliver a global experience, from start to finish.
